It seems spring has sprung and I am so unbelievably excited to start gardening outdoors. It’s been a long winter, hasn’t it?
While indoor plants are my forte, I know I have lots to learn about outdoor gardening this season. After feeling the effects of hard labor in the yard this past fall, I’m all for finding ways to minimize the pain.
Did you know there are ergonomic gardening tools to make gardening chores easier and reduce back, wrist, and hand strain? Sign me up!
Keep an eye out for gardening tools labeled “ergonomic” and here are some other tips by tool type:
- Small hand tools: look for cushioned and curved handles that allow wrist alignment to your preference
- Pruners: look for extendable handles that allow you to reach further without stressing your back. Long-handled spades and rakes help ease bending and back strain.
- Shovels: look for the lightest weight possible and a cushioned circular or D-shape handle
- Knee protection: look for knee pads or portable benches to alleviate pain in the joints from constant up and down of planting, weeding, and harvesting
It’s amazing how many more options exist on the market for ergonomic gardening. Keep in mind that pain often results from using tools that are too large so make sure to find the right size for your body.
And remember, it’s not just about the tools, but also making sure you’re using those tools correctly to alleviate stress on your body. Make sure to rotate tasks often and take frequent rests from repetitive motions. When lifting heavy objects, lift by squatting and using your legs, not your back.
